This is not true. I have opened several accounts with different banks in the last few years. You do need: passport, utility bill in your name (and partner if joint acct.), 6 CONSECUTIVE months bank statement, mortgage/lease agreement and tax form or W2's. We also had a letter from our bank (US) stating how long we had been with them. Get a current acct opened, and all others, including online banking, should be easy. Also, in your case, if worse comes to worse, you could have a cousin on the acct, too. Good luck, it shouldn't be a problem....the banks want your money right now. I think a credit union or building asso. (EBS for example) might offer the best rates.
