Hi there. I've been working for about a year now to track down all the necessary documents to apply for Irish citizenship by decent (I'm a U.S.-born citizen). I first submitted my application to the Irish consulate in Chicago back in September 2008, but it was returned to me in November because my dad's birth certificate wasn't properly certified. I tracked down the proper certificate and mailed it off in early December. Since then, I've been eagerly awaiting my citizenship so I can move abroad. A few concerns I have:
-The Irish consulate in Chicago won't confirm receipt of my application and said when I asked them on the phone "if you don't hear anything from us that's a good thing." They said it should take 6-8 months to process. So now I'm waiting to receive it between May and July, but I'm worried because I haven't heard a word from them. Can someone tell me this is normal and I'll hear from them soon?
-I want to move to Ireland as soon as I get my citizenship. Is there anything keeping me from doing this? I have an American passport, but no Irish passport (obviously, since I'm not yet a citizen). Can I move to Ireland with my citizenship but no passport?
-What other things can I be doing right now to prepare for my move?
Honestly, I feel quite stressed out about this since my life is essentially at a stand-still waiting for these papers. I'm not renewing my lease for my apartment here in the states, I've stopped looking for long-term jobs (currently surviving on a temp. job), I'm putting it all on the line for a move to Ireland, but I haven't heard a word from them yet. Does anyone have some words of advice or comfort?
Thank you,
John
