To make sure you don't come to the attention of the Garda, just make sure that all three required forms are properly up to date and displayed on your windshield.
Insurance form disc
Road Tax Disc
National Car Test Disc
When you pay your insurance and road tax and pass the car test, you get a form back with a perforated disc which you carefully tear out and display on your car windshield. Every car usually comes with one of these plastic windshield disc holders. If not, any auto supply store has them.
Typically, you'll be in a line of traffic in the middle of nowhere when suddenly the Garda wave you down. You roll down your window, smile pleasantly and hope you paid on time while they look over the dates on your windshield discs. If they're all up to date, then they smile back and wave you on your way.
If not, you get waved to one side and out comes the ticket book and then you have to produce your licence and paperwork.
Feed the taxman on time and you'll only come to the notice of the Garda in an accident. Be sure not to have one of those!

: Hibernian is great, AXA prices are double.
: Also, the best bet is to go to a broker.
: Know the engine size of the car you are
: getting and have ORIGINAL (not photocopy or
: fax) of no-claim letter. The broker shops
: around and gets the best deal for you. Then
: you have a year to get the provisional
: license.

: Thanks everyone for the advice! Had meant
: to
: ask about insurance as well, so thanks for
: reading my mind. I will look into those
: insurance companies, and work on my
: 'flirting' technique for use with the garda!
: ;o)

: Hibernian will do it.

: It might come in handy next year, who did
: you
: use for insurance?

: No, I was insured fairly easily.

: Wouldnt the problem be insurance?

: I assume that they could ask for your
: passport
: to determine how long you've been there (I
: believe technically you're supposed to have
: it on you at all time....yeah right).
: However, the few times I was pulled over
: when I was living there (only once for
: speeding), not once did they ever ask how
: long I had been living there or if I lived
: there, nor did they ask me to produce my
: passport. Also, if you plan on moving back
: to the US after a year, don't bother as the
: Irish require you forfeit your foreign
: drivers license when you are issued an Irish
: one. Good luck and just make noce with the
: Garda if need be!

: I am an American who has been living in
: Ireland for about two years, during which
: time I have been taking public tranport. I
: am now travelling more often for work and
: the time has come to get a car. I (think!)
: I understand the rules regarding driver's
: licenses (resident here, so must get Irish
: provisional and then take test for full
: license). I could get the provisional
: license, but with the recent crack-down I
: will be required to have a fully licensed
: driver with me at all times (not possible).
: Plus, it is unlikely that I will be living
: here much more than a year, and it will take
: almost that long to become fully licensed.
:
: Will I be able to get by driving on my US
: license? Law states that you can drive on
: US license for up to 1 year. I have been
: here more than 2, but if I get pulled over,
: how will they know when I arrived in
: Ireland? Has anyone had any experience with
: this, any information would be useful.
: Thanks!
