I am an American who has been living in Ireland for about two years, during which time I have been taking public tranport. I am now travelling more often for work and the time has come to get a car. I (think!) I understand the rules regarding driver's licenses (resident here, so must get Irish provisional and then take test for full license). I could get the provisional license, but with the recent crack-down I will be required to have a fully licensed driver with me at all times (not possible). Plus, it is unlikely that I will be living here much more than a year, and it will take almost that long to become fully licensed.
Will I be able to get by driving on my US license? Law states that you can drive on US license for up to 1 year. I have been here more than 2, but if I get pulled over, how will they know when I arrived in Ireland? Has anyone had any experience with this, any information would be useful. Thanks!
