The sheer practicalities of setting up interviews with recruiters suggest to me that you'd want to give it at least 2 weeks before your arrival. Give them a phone call - Skype if they have, Skype monthly to regular phone if not or some other cheap phone method.
Emails will be ignored. Call.
I think everyone is on hold while they see how far down we go, but there will still be companies needing people in your field. You're right to press on - and right to be wary.
At worst, you'll have a fabulous two weeks.

: Hi Sandy,
: Thanks for the response.
:
: Getting an Irish telephone number is easy
: enough to get with Skype. As for an Irish
: address - a bit trickier to get but I may be
: able to swing an Irish PO box.
:
: Judging by your experience, I may start
: approaching recruiters as late as a week or
: so before my trip...
:
: If nothing happens this first trip...I may
: schedule another...and another...:-)

: Without an Irish telephone number [and
: preferably an Irish address] on your CV it
: is unlikely that you will get any response.
:
: Prior to the recession I had one of
: Ireland’s top professional recruiters send
: out my CV to firms that were actively
: seeking someone with my skills. This went on
: for 2 months without a single response.
:
: I finally moved over [from the US],
: purchased a phone and found a place to live.
: I sent my updated CV to the recruiter and
: within 2 hours from the time they resent my
: CV to the same firms I had 3 interviews. I
: had 6 interviews that first week with 2
: offers.
:
: You have to be here to get a job. And now
: that there have been a lot of redundancies
: there will be a many highly qualified people
: going after every opening.
:
: That said; good luck. You can’t win the
: lotto if you don’t buy a ticket.

: Hmmm 4-6 months sound very long...I would
: think once contacted, a prospective employer
: would want to schedule an interview anywhere
: from that same week to maybe the next.
: However, I was thinking about replying to
: job posts around a month before the 2 week
: trip - allowing enough time for them to sift
: through/find my CV and approve it before
: contacting me...But as mentioned...lots of
: variables here :-)

: Maybe 4-6months prior, maybe longer?
: That's
: a really hard question to answer though- way
: too many variables. This might be horrible
: advice but my opinion would be to move over
: first, then try to get a job (it's very hard
: to get a job from long distance). Most
: companies will not even interview you or
: look at your cv if you are not even living
: in Ireland. Good luck! I hope it works out
: for you!

: Thanks for the reply Lisa. Yes, I am well
: aware of the recession. However, I'm not
: going to let it discourage my efforts. :-)
: Any suggestions regarding the timeline
: question?

: Jobs are very scarce right now John.
: Ireland
: is in a deep recession. When we moved over
: a few years ago, it took my husband (also
: an IT director) 8 months to get a job (and
: this was during the economic boom!) Here's
: an article from today's paper that might
: shed a little light on the current

:
: I wish you luck in finding something. Brace
: yourself as you might be in competition with
: thousands of recently made redundant Irish.

: Hi there,
: My wife and I would like to move to Ireland
: later on in the year. However, this will
: depend on me finding a job first. I'm an IT
: manager and I'm currently working toward
: some certifications to boost my resume. I'd
: like to have some job interviews set up in
: time for our little reconnaissance trip at
: the end of April - the trip itself will be
: about 2 weeks long. I'm thinking about
: approaching some recruiters and maybe answer
: some ads on various job posting
: sites...however, I was wondering how soon
: before the trip do you think I should start
: applying for jobs? I was thinking maybe a
: month before the April trip...??
:
: Any suggestions?
:
: p.s.
: I really like the movetoireland.com
: website...and will probably start
: subscribing to it soon...
