Mike,
The Guardian might be right, but the leadership of this country right now seems to be saddling us with so much debt and so much overhang and making such a mess of it that it will take a decade or more to clear away.
When Ireland was last at its ebb - 1987 - it really took until 1996 till the groundwork was set for the Celtic Tiger. Tiger 1 was real, but all this flim-flam since 2004 has gotten the Irish into much, much worse shape than they were in 1987 with vast debt to clear.
And exactly the same folks who dug us into this hole are precisely the same people who are still in charge - same bankers, same Fianna Fail government, same Finance Minister/now Taoiseach, same Ministers, same Civil Service head mandarins, the unshakeable golden circle.
They haven't made a good decision in years and their total incompetence is now coming home to roost.
Shades of Bush without an election to clear the way.
For every month they're in power, add another year to the recovery is the way it looks to me. If they manage to hold on for the next 3 1/2 years, the irish will undoubtedly bounce back. Like they did after the Famine - it only took a century and a quarter.
My main hope is that you're right - even this incompetent set of chancers can't keep the Irish down.
