Hi Steve,
Hopefully things will have improved next year, but I feel I should warn you that finding a job as a healthcare professional in the current climate is not nearly as easy now as it has been in the past. I work for the HSE as a speech therapist and it was very easy for me to get a job here in Dublin 2 years ago, however if I had tried to come over now it would be highly unlikely that I would get an offer. They DO need therapists (and nurses), but there is just not enough money for the posts, and what few jobs are available seem to be going to Irish or EU citizens. I know of 2 American nurses who moved here over 2 months ago (both with 5+ years of nursing experience) and they are still looking for jobs. A few interviews with both public and private hospitals, but as far as I know still no offers. And it looks like if/when they do get jobs, they will be forced to do several weeks of an unpaid nursing training rotation. That's what it looks like in Dublin anyways, not sure about the rest of the country.
Don't let this stop you from trying to come over, things may drastically change in a year, so keep your dream alive! But I just felt I should let you know from experience that it might not be as easy as it has been in the past. I hope it all works out for you! Best of luck with school (I'm from Michigan by the way - hope you're a Spartan, or anything but a Wolverine, ha ha!)

: How bad is the downturn? The worst in Europe
: excluding Iceland. Better than Chad or
: Somalia or Gaza.
:
: Pigheaded government and greedy bankers got
: us into this and they're almost entirely
: still in charge. We won't get out of this
: mess till they go - and they're not going
: anywhere.
:
: So, we're in it for the long haul. Still,
: people get sick, at least half of the
: populace is secure in government jobs or as
: secure jobs as they come these days.
:
: The government used to talk about 2009
: hopefully, now they're telling us 2010. Not
: likely. But, eventually, a bottom will be
: reached. We sure aren't there yet - lots and
: lots more bad news to come.
:
: But, everyone needs nurses. Don't put off
: the move forever. One thing that's good is
: that when things bottom out, those with
: secure permanent jobs will get houses for
: reasonable prices.
:
: The housing market has fallen 25pc without a
: doubt and canny buyers are offering
: desperate sellers deals with another 10 or
: 15pc off. So, down 40pc.
:
: My own view - but who knows - is that
: they'll fall further than that. When they
: reach the historic sustainable level of 3 or
: 4 times annual earnings, then we're where we
: should be. That means most homes in the low
: 200,000 range or less if you take into
: account two income families.

: Thanks for the encouragement. I was starting
: to wonder if the market in Ireland was
: saturated. The jobs.ie and other sites still
: show a plethora of openings, but it's hard
: to judge the scope of the economic downturn
: from here. This site has been very helpful
: in that regard. As I said, we are still
: coming over, we will just have to wait a
: little longer.

: While cutbacks in employment are everywhere,
: nurses should still be able to get jobs here
: - or anywhere, for that matter. Good job to
: have - always in demand.

: Thank you. The An Bord site has been updated
: since I last checked. There is now an
: explicit denial of all Associate Degree RN's
: listed. Bad news, but you have saved me 175
: Euros! Thanks for that. I will have to
: finish my Bachelors' here in Michigan and
: come over next year instead of this. (We
: hope )

: Go to www.aba.ie, the Irish Nursing Board
: "An Bord Altranais", where you
: will find answers to registering to
: practice. Jo H.

: Hello,
: My wife and I would like to move over later
: this year. I wondered if anyone knows if an
: Associate Degree Registered Nurse license
: will fly with the An Bord? I have heard that
: only Bachelor Degree nurses are accepted in
: Ireland, is this true? The An Bord website
: just says to submit your CV (and your
: money). If I have no chance of acceptance
: then we'll try again after I get my
: Bachelors'. Thanks.
