I concur with Scott. It is difficult to estimate start up costs unless you know the city/village and type of place you plan to get. Keep in mind that when you rent you will need to provide a security deposit up front (typically 4-6 wks rent) plus your first month's rent. So that will probably be a minimum of 1500 Euro right there. ALso, even if you start working from the day you arrive, don't count on your salary for that first month. It will take (like the States) a few weeks to process and until you have your PPS number you will probably be on 'Emergency Tax' where they basically take the maximum tax out of your salary (they refund the difference later). So basically, like Scott said, have a savings 'cushion' of at least a few thousand euro. Keep an eye on the exchange rate, that can make a big difference, especially when you are just moving over!

: These things are always subjective. Do you
: have steak every night with fine wines and
: plan on renting in the highest price
: neighbourhoods? Or, is it cabbage and
: potatoes in a hovel?
:
: Assuming you run in the middle range, then
: the salary you quote will get you by in a
: nice middle class sort of way in most of
: Ireland. Rent will be your biggest expense -
: anywhere from 600 Euro per month in the
: countryside to 1500 Euro and up in many
: Dublin neighbourhoods.
:
: You will have many extraordinary expenses
: your first month - hotel or B&B for a few
: nights, touristy things, stocking a pantry
: for the first time, kids' school uniforms
: and books, everything from cleaning liquids
: to curry powder.
:
: You'd better have a kitty of a couple of
: thousand euro that you can blow through for
: the first weeks when essentially you'll be
: on a vacation.
:
: You'll get a handle on it after you settle
: into a place, rented or owned. You
: definitely do not want to buy right a house
: now because the market has not yet bottomed.
: Once you're settled, you can start looking.
: You'll have a hard time arranging a mortgage
: anyway until you have a permanent position,
: particularly since the banks are skint.
:
: It will take weeks to process your husband's
: papers anyway. Cash in hand (or plastic with
: cleared balance) is what you want to have
: for those first weeks.

: I am in the process of finding a job in
: Ireland. I am an Occupational Therapist and
: the offers would range from 55-65 Euro a
: year. Here's the question, I have 3 kids
: that will be coming with me and my husband,
: I would like for my husband to not work
: right away until we have a place for the
: kids to go....would we be able to survive
: well enough living off of one salary for a
: month or so? Not sure yet where we will be
: placed.
