Thanks for asking. Here's the story.
I accepted a position in Dublin last fall but the company got tired of waiting for my green card and after 6 weeks rescinded their offer. The govmnt asked twice for additional info that the firm should have provided in the first place. Good riddance!
I then had 10 days left on my 3 month tourist stamp and immigration would not give me an extension, even though I had plenty of cash and was in a much needed profession [I’m an architect].
I contacted several different recruiters. Hayes turned out to be terrific. I highly recommend them. They recruit for 20 different professions all over the world.
Technically I was required to leave Ireland on a Monday but the only flights were Saturday & Tuesday. On The previous Wednesday I decided to take a chance and book the Tuesday flight so I told my recruiter that I would be available for interviews on Monday.
With only one interview booked I took the train to Cork on Thursday morning. After the interview I called my recruiter and they had a second interview for me in Cork. Before the day was out they had a third interview in Cork scheduled for Friday so I stayed in Cork overnight, which I had prepared for.
Monday morning my recruiter called me and said that they had an interview set up in Port Laoise [took the bus]. After that interview I called my recruiter. One of the firms in Cork wanted a second interview that evening so I grabbed the train.
I got back to Dublin on the midnight train and was at the airport at 7 the next morning.
It was the longest, most depressing flight of my life. I thought that my Irish dream was over.
It was a 1 hour ride from the airport to my father’s house. When I arrived I set up my laptop and had a message from my recruiter with a job offer!!
Luck of the Irish, I guess.

: Thanks Sandy. I reviewed some of your posts
: and it seems like you had a crisis some time
: ago. Did you have to leave the country? Did
: you end up going back (to Ireland)?
: Interested to know how it turned out for
: you.
: I think I will try to line up a few
: interested agencies/employers and take a
: three week holiday (as Scott suggested) to
: meet them. I'm hoping this approach works.
: If not, then I'll dive in much the same way
: you did!

: I have written my story before but here is a
: short version. From the US I contacted
: several recruiters who specialized in
: placing people in my profession. Only one
: contacted me.
:
: They tried for several months without luck
: to get me interviews. I also personally sent
: out over 100 CV’s.
:
: I finally bit the bullet and moved over.
: First thing I purchased a telephone. Second
: thing I found a place to rent for 3 months.
:
: The next day I contacted the recruiter and
: sent her a new CV with my Irish address
: & phone number. She called back in the
: late afternoon to tell me that she had just
: resent my CV to the folks on her list.
: Within 90 minutes I had three interviews.
: Within a couple of days I had 2 more. Five
: interviews yielded 2 offers.
:
: Yes, you have to be here.
:
: P.S. If you haven’t purchased the full site
: do so immediately. It will be the best
: investment you can make in support of your
: move.

: Hi all! Great message board here. Hoping to
: get some advice or guidance on my best
: options.
: I currently work for a large consulting
: business and have a wealth of experience in
: 'management consulting'. I've looked for
: jobs in Ireland for quite some time and my
: skills are in demand there (specifically,
: certifications I hold).
: I have no family connections to Ireland but
: I'm wondering what the best approach is to
: find an employer to sponsor me. My company
: does not operate there so that's not an
: option.
: Should I keep applying and hope I get lucky,
: or should I just bite the bullet, move there
: for three months and then search hard while
: in country? I can take about US$50K with
: me, but prefer not to spend it all searching
: for a job!
:
: Any advice on what the best approach is? I
: really love the country, the people and
: culture. By the way, I'm a US citizen.
: Thanks!
