bringing a dog into ireland

Hello, I want to bring my dog from Canada into Ireland. I have read a little into this and I see that you can bring your dog into England and then ferry across to Ireland, so that the dog doesnt have to spend 6 months in quarantine. Has anybody done this that could give me some advice? Thanks!
