Seattle has a reputation for having the most rain and least sunshine of any city in the US. Ireland would be a big improvement.
This is my first summer in Ireland and I don’t mind the weather at all. While it does rain often it usually does so in very small doses.
Maine, US [where I’m from] has an annual rainfall greater than Dublin but less than Cork, where I’m now living. In Maine it doesn’t rain nearly as often but it is usually a “soaker”. If the weekend calls for rain you can cancel your outdoor plans. It is not uncommon to rain an inch [25mm] per hour. They have had 6-10 inches in the last 48 hours. That is what I’m used to.
Not so in Cork. I no longer pay attention to the forecast when planning outdoor activities. If it does rain it will likely be just a few millimetres and be over as soon as every gets wet, and often before that.
The forecast seems to always call for rain but I think that the weather-guessers are just playing the odds.
Just because the sun is shining now I never leave a building without a raincoat or umbrella in my backpack. It may only rain for 5 minutes but it could be the next 5 minutes.
And it rarely gets what you would consider cold. I walk to work and in dead of the winter a light jacket is usually unzipped by the time I arrive. I have never worn an overcoat when I have on a suit coat, but I’ve nearly worn one out lugging it around.
I rented a room in a Dublin home where there were several windows that were rarely closed all winter. That wasn’t my preference but the homeowners liked the fresh air. And the back door was left wide open most of every day. One of Scott’s Geothermal Articulated Nonrigid Stabile Yarn Units was all it took to be comfortable.
And the best news of all? NO BLACKFLIES OR MOSQUITOS!

: I live in Seattle.
:
: The sun does not seem to show itself for 10
: months out of the year. Yes, a bit of an
: exageration.
:
: Honestly, my view of Seattle is that, from
: October till June, the sun comes out every
: 10 days (very briefly) and the goes away the
: next day and we have another 10 days of dark
: and grey and mist. It is very beautiful
: country, of course.
:
: I have lived here for 11 years and, for me,
: it has been fairly consistent.
:
: I lived in TX, for 10 yrs previously, so the
: sun & the warmth is not what I am
: searching for for 12 months out of the year
: (although that is not terrible ) or i
: wouldn't have left TX.
:
: What I did do this winter is take a look at
: web cams in Galway and Dublin and noticed
: that even though there were clouds and rain
: there was also sun mixed in as opposed to
: the Great Northwest.
:
: So I have kept up my cam research on the
: same pages and noticed that, at least
: Galway, has had a pretty wet summer.
:
: Not just wet, but grey and wet all day.
: Unlike the winter.
:
: When I was there last year my aunt said the
: the summer past had not been much of a
: summer. So it sounded like it was unusual
: and hopefully that is like this summer.
:
:
: So my question is: Is this summer unusual
: from all your perspectives? Or is summer
: more wet than the rest of the year, on
: average?
