Posted by Red-Five on January 16, 2003, 7:02 am, in reply to "Re: the incredible she hulk. story" I have no problem with negative critisism for fee based products. If you wish to slate a video, comicbook or even a pay site, then I think that's fair. You paid your money and you should be allowed to have your say. But when someone gives something of themselves FOR FREE, and you can't even be bothered to make your critisism CONSTRUCTIVE - well that is not only telling of a lack of good manners, but also contributes heavily to the destruction of the community. If you want to know why certain contributors to the Alter Ego site didn't produce as much work as we'd all have liked, I can tell you (fact, not opinion!) that it was because of the minority of fans who felt compelled to "tell it like it is", and in doing so demoralised and upset the contributor. Indeed, right now another mainstay of the transformation scene is complaining to me about the disrespect of some fans. Will he shut up shop too? Who knows? My answer to the problem was to retreat to a private web site - membership only. The only way in is to have yourself preposed by another member, as someone who will be prepared to contribute either their own work, or constructive comment for other people's work. Ironically this "gated" community now has buckef-fulls of exclusive original or rare TF pictures, stories and photos - all because the members know it won't appear in the public domain, to be gobbled up by lurkers and the "tell it how it is" squad. I hope that "luis angel, rivera jr." posts again, whoever they may be. Nobody gets it spot-on the first time they try, and with the support of fellow tf fans, and helpful CONSTRUCTIVE critisism, he/she may turn into a fine fanfic author. Of course the "tell it how it is" brigade would rather they were hacked down before they'd even begun. :-(
It's people "telling it how it is" that drives more contributors off of the net than any other reason. And it is ironic that, almost without exception, these self-appointed 'quality controllers' never actually contribute anything themselves - except to bad mouth other people's work.
