In the very brief excerpt from what is said to be an eight minute tape, Dr. al-Zawahri offered Americans “one last advice” for dealing with the Muslim Ummah, adding “I am sure that they will not heed it.” “You have to choose between one of two methods to deal with Muslims: either on mutual respect and exchange of interests, or to deal with them as if they are spoils of war,” al-Zawahri said. “This is your problem and you have to choose yourself. But you must know that we are a nation of patience and endurance. We will stand firm to fight you with Allah’s help until the last hour.” In the tape, Dr. al-Zawahri sat in front of a brown background, one shoulder covered by a brown blanket and a gun leaning against the wall. He ridiculed US forces and described them as “hiding in their trenches” in Afghanistan and said that invading Iraq “was only an introduction to what the Muslim nations will be subjected to by the US”. It appears that the tape was made prior to the Nov. 2 presidential election in the US as Dr. al-Zawahri said there was no difference between President Bush and the then presidential hopeful John Kerry. “As for elections in America, the two candidates are competing to win the satisfaction of Israel,” saying that fact proved “there will be no solution with America without forcing it to surrender to justice. The results of the elections do not matter for us. Vote whoever you want, Bush, Kerry or the devil himself. This does not concern us. What concerns us is to purge our land from the aggressors.” It is curious why the tape has surfaced now. A spokesman for al-Jazeera said the tape received on Monday however the channel has come under increasing pressure from the United States which is evident from the small portions of Dr. Zawahri’s address that was actually aired. It is unclear if the tapes release was just delayed or if its timing is intended to indicate that an Al-Qaida operation is in the works. Rumors that a “spectacular” Al-Qaida attack have been rife since Osama bin Laden issued his last tape on October 9th that suggested possible targets being the UK, Israel and the US. Al-Qaida has traditionally made statements before attacks and rarely claims responsibility afterwards.
