Israeli radio said that initial reports indicated the explosion inside the Hilton hotel on Thursday may have been caused by a gas canister explosion. Israeli security forces had warned Israeli travellers against visiting Egyptian resorts on the Red Sea, saying they might be targeted by militants. Aljazeera's correspondent in Ram Allah says there are some 45,000 Israeli tourists celebrating their Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah holidays. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing part of the hotel on fire and said that a ceiling may have collapsed. "The hotel is on fire on the eastern side, the entry point, the lobby. People are trying to get out," a reporter for Israel Radio said from the scene in Taba. Israeli helicopters were reported to have started evacuating wounded to nearby hospitals in the Israeli port city of Eilat.
