Posted by NEWS on 10/8/2004, 13:50:51 A prayer meeting at a mosque in north London has been disrupted by supporters of the radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri. The incident began shortly after the Finsbury Park Mosque reopened on Friday for the first time in 18 months. Following negotiations with police the group agreed to leave the mosque after two hours. The Muslim cleric, who is currently being held at Belmarsh Prison, faces extradition to the US. 'Return to normality' Chief Superintendent Barry Norman told BBC London that police were going "to have to carry on talking until the whole community see the mosque as belonging to all". "Then the mosque can open more because at the moment it is just partially opening," he said. "And this community can return to normality and the police can get back to doing what we are best at which is policing this community rather than policing outside here [the mosque]." A court hearing to decide whether Mr Abu Hamza should be extradited to face terrorism charges was adjourned on 23 July. He is accused of sending a man to a training camp in Afghanistan, advising terrorists in Yemen and writing to a Taleban official.
