Posted by NEWS on 1/6/2004, 16:31:46 Earlier this morning it was reported that Mr Pachachi was the preferred choice of the United States and UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi. Reuters news agency quoted Mahmoud Othman, a member of Iraq's governing council, as saying the 81-year-old former foreign minister would be formally appointed later today. But the AFP news agency has said that Mr Pachachi has turned the job down. He was previously seen as one of two prominent candidates, along with the current leader of the governing council Ghazi al Yawar. It is now expected that Mr al Yawar will assume control of the country after the June 30th deadline for the transfer of power from the coalition provisional authority to the Iraqi governing council. There are hopes that Iraqis will be able to participate in full scale elections next January.
