Posted by Lead Balloons on 10/2/2007, 5:15 pm Get involved. And now, a word from the organisers: Concrete Recordings and Blowout present LAMENT NOT the end of Dpercussion for That Manchester is a snippet of Manchester’s finest marking the end of the festival season on one long Saturday on 6th October. Nor fear the incessant rainfall or despair if you’ve told yourself that for another 12 months you’ve most definitely taken that last deep breath to get you through imminent portaloo hell. For within the walls of The Irish World Heritage Centre these things need not concern. The Concrete Recordings team whose shenanigans brought the Late N Live tent to The Glastonbury Festival with a distinctly Mancunian flavour are teaming up with Blowout and doing the same on their very doorstep. Again presented by Channel M’s Gerry McLaughlin whose increasingly popular Wednesday to Friday night City Centre Social is quickly becoming the nation’s answer to a lazy A&R man’s dream. Smile and jump around on 6th October for you might just get on the telly! Those who came to the inaugural That Manchester 2006 will recall that less than a mile from the MEN arena, or a five minute bus journey on the 135 or 59 from Lever Street will take you down Cheetham Hill Road, to the junction with Queens Road where lies an impressive 750 capacity Irish Centre, comprising main hall, upstairs second stage, third bar complete with large TV screens for those who can’t bear to miss the sport on a Saturday afternoon and a restaurant all graced with the charmed décor of shiny Irish crests, pot dogs, woollen lepricorns and Tato crisps. What’s more, should all this tempt your fancy to go visit the real deal here’s the place to book a ferry across the Irish Sea! They’ll also know the snack bar was mighty fine but light on the pocket with Irish stew a firm favourite and the Guinness so popular that the inconceivable happened and the bar ran dry. Perhaps for this reason the Concrete and Blowout team were welcomed back with arms open wide. And this year its not just the usual Manchester suspects on the bill. A little poetic license means we’ve gracefully extended our boundaries to include Bolton’s Our Fold, Wigan’s The Nuns and Preston’s The Redwings. Yet a further analysis of bands more typical of the Mancunian scene reveals that the whole of the North West is represented here anyway. Take The KBC for example and even the scousers are embraced as The Maybes bring their own brand of musical entertainment to the day’s proceedings. Actual guests to our city from way down the M6 corridor in Wolverhampton are the promising The Lines, and from Late N Live we just couldn’t resist 2004 Glastonbury unsigned finalists Hazah, Brighton’s Smallwhitelight and allowed in from our illustrious capital are Love Minus Zero featuring ex Babyshambles brothers Jamie and Peter, sons of The Only Ones’ Pete Perrett. From the angelic acoustics of Alexis McLean to the Scally Punk of Orphan Boy the 20 bands on the bill should mean something for all. A safe bet on everyone’s taste are the favourable drinks prices and where else do you get a thatched bar around these parts? DJ sets from Blowout, Jay Ellis, Friends of Mine, Akoustik Anarkhy’s Soft Priest, Pasta Paul and DJ Libril will take us from lunch-time to the early drunken hours. Pity those couples whose Golden Wedding Anniversary should fall on 6th October 2007, because for this day only The Irish Rover won’t blast from the Irish Centre’s sound system, the bearded fiddlers will merely twiddle their thumbs and Ms Malone will wheel her barrow elsewhere in favour of ‘de young folk’s music.’ It’s a little bit different, it might just become a riot and its just £8.50 plus booking fee from www.ticketline.co.uk /0870-4445556.
