Wired, weird and wonderful" "Burrell could be one of the more left-field successes of the year." "His more eccentric side results in 'Ooompa Zoompa', where 1960s Moody Blues B-sides are played backwards whilst overlaid with Spike Milligan out-takes. It's the 'Machadaynu' sketch from Look Around You made flesh, and it's probably the best antidote to folk's introspection you'll hear this side of Christmas. "Neil Burrell’s PR hails him as the antithesis of trendy singer/songwriting and it’d be fair to conclude that “Ooompa Zoompa” delivers much of this promise. Within the song there are obvious thefts from Roald Dahl’s work of fiction, but nothing prepares you for the jumbled musings that often cheekily sounds like Bertie Wooster on crack. “Evelyn” falls into a more traditional format and whilst Burrell is determined to forge a strange reputation this is the better of the two tracks. Burrell – barmy or genius ? – the debate will surely rage, but whilst the lead track is fairly disposable there is evidence of a solid and original foundation to his fragile product." 'An intriguing mess of intelli-folk belligerence.' "Mr Burrell wins the award for the most bizarre single of the year so far, by a country mile. Oompa Zoompa is a hideous mash-up of medieval folk; the annoying bit’s in Jack Black films when he makes up songs and pretends he’s a singing trumpet; Oompa Loompas; and a touch of Ivor Cutler too. It’s exceptionally weird" "The first song is an unintelligible babble, like the mental guy outside the supermarket talking through a rolled up piece of cardboard; we really can’t emphasise how insane it sounds like - even Syd Barrett would distance himself from it if he were still alive. The flip side at least proves he isn’t completely insane. "

"he could never be accused of churning out your standard singer-songwriter fare. 'Ooompa Zoompa' in all its out of control Syd Barrett-meets-Euros Childs mania makes a bold statement, though precisely what that statement is remains unclear, obscured as it is by whirring synthesizer and references to Teletubbies. On the flip, 'Evelyn' seems comparatively conservative. Given the pronounced eccentricities of the A-side, the song quite surprisingly reveals itself as a haunting piece of subverted balladry, that for all its whimsy remains thoroughly affecting, even beautiful. Certainly an artist to keep your eye on."

Barely comprehensible nonsense lyrics stumble over basic chords at the rate of nuts, often peppered with the occasional mention of "nipples", "stagnant pools", and "dogs" catching the ear. As a recorded artefact he may be curiously charming; live he has to be seen to be believed. If not entirely understood."
