I think you owe the guy an explanation, but not continued contact.
During the awful course of my marriage to a cheating wife I befriended a lady in a similar situation. Our emotional connection was and is genuine, matched only by my spiraling depression caused by my inability to move to a real level beyond was was going on.
I couldn't do it, i couldn't express it to her, and I just stopped communicating with no explanation.
I felt like such a shmuck then more time went on and I just let it be that way.
She tried to communicate with me and was very hurt and bewildered. She did not deserve my poor treatment of her. I regret it every single day.
I cannot now approach her and apologize, I am too ashamed. She stopped trying to hear from me, but I know that this guy you cut off is as bewildered as she is.
He may be reacting badly though, so just inform him and then move on with your H.
