Sounds like you have all your ducks in a row, Shelly. I can't believe you are on your last "student". If I'm not mistake, I believe you and I have a son about the same age, or at least doing the same grade level.
Am I thinking of school yet? Um.......NOT!!!
Sorry, didn't mean to shout at ya.
We had such a looooong year, what with ds having math struggles, and my Dad's sickness, then passing away. We sooooo need a break. And did I mention we soooooooo need a break????
Because we are going to transition curriculums in spelling, math, AND history, I have to view the Teaching Textbooks to see how it works, plus I have to start looking at the Spelling Power. Is it that complicated that they have to give you a DVD to figure out how to use it??
Here's our plan for September (hopefully!):
DS:
math-teaching textbooks
lang.-abeka
writing-abeka
spelling-spelling power
vocabulary-wordly wise
history-mystery of history volume 1
art-artistic pursuits
dd:
math-abeka
phonics/lang.-abeka
penmanship-abeka
spelling-abeka
science-apologia's exploring creation with botany
history-mystery of history
art-artistic pursuits
I am combining history and some science for both. I think it will be more enjoyable that way, and also save me a bunch of time. Mystery of History is geared toward 4th-8th graders, but I will just pare it down for my dd, and do other activities with her. For science, I have a used copy of abeka's 6th grade text and the answer key, that's it. I will have ds join in with the botany study, and then we will choose chapters from his science book as a jump off point for a theme study, and grab some library books, field trips, DVD's, etc...I have enough science stuff in the house for his 6th grade year, until it's time for something else.
He wasn't grasping some of the concepts from the 6th gr. book totally, and I don't think it's the concepts that he didn't get, it was the terminology and the convoluted explanations.
I'll have him read on his own from abeka's health book, too. He's at that age now where he has more questions that need to be directed to dh, KWIM?
BTW, when we checked out teaching textbooks at the homeschool convention, I picked up their 6th grade book and noticed that, by using abeka, ds had already completed 3/4 of the concepts that are in the 6th grade book, so we bought the 7th gr. level. It still has review, then adds on new concepts fairly early on. I'm hoping that we didn't make a mistake, and wondering if I should have had him repeat all this stuff, since he had trouble with some things; not too much. Mainly metrics, and long division. Guess we'll just see how it goes.
O.K. This was very long, but you DID want us to talk, LOL!
Blessings!
Diana
