Stay Alive (old spoilers)

Wolverine: The Wendigo was born outta Indian legend-- an ancient shaman's curse on any man who tasted human flesh. Translation: some Hannibal Lechter wannabe-- or some starvin' campers lost in the wilderness canibal. He gets possessed by the spirit of Wendigo.

So how is it in "Stay alive (vol2 #170-172) Mauvais is busy feasting on Canadians on Canadian soil, but doesn't turn into the Wendigo until he eats the creature's heart? Or does his being a flwesh-fueled sorcerer somehow prot4ect him from the curse, which can only be transferred to him if he eats the Wendigo itself? Giant plot hole? Help!
