Can the beholder of a secondary title (royal or not) relinquish it to his immediate successor ?
I am thinking of the Edinburgh case. Now that Edward finally got his ducal title, could he pass the Wessex title to James (or ask Charles to pass it) or is he "forced" to keep it for life, although James uses it merely as a courtsey one ?
It is not possible in the United Kingdom for a peer to cede a peerage title to his heir. The Duke of Edinburgh will be Earl of Wessex until his death, at which point it will go from being a courtesy title to a substantive/peerage title for James.
