What are you basing that on?
The fact that all other dukedoms conferred on royal princes have so far been hereditary.
One would naturally think the title would revert to the Crown upon the death of Prince Edward, leaving the Monarch of the day to bestow it on a family member who would obviously be a descendant of Prince Philip.
If the object is simply to keep it within the family then a hereditary title for his brother would have ensured that. If the object is to keep the title royal then I can see why it would have to be re-created after the new duke passes away as future generations after his son would not be royal.
