When I lived in London, I wore my white poppy - rather than a red one - and attended remembrance events; I did so because those who died had served their country and did their duty as they saw it. I especially remember those who died to save the country from fascist invasion. It's about public sorrow at the loss or maiming of young lives. But I've got to admit - after seeing news reports about another British fatality in war in Afghanistan (213, so far) - that there is a surreal, almost grotesque, picture - and a double standard - when high-ranking officers (princes, included) wear a red poppy on their uniforms.
