Yes, but man would think that the disappointments of royal life would be at least balanced by the advantages of royal life.
What I -again- miss in this whole story is the word sacrifice. For the two princesses. For the monarchy. As no any other woman in the United Kingdom the then Duchess of York had all possibility to lead her own, separated, life from her 'boring' husband but still remain The Duchess of York and being a valued member of 'The Firm'.
Then we would have seen the Silver Wedding of The Duke and Duchess of York, and in the coming decades we would have seen a gracefully aging Duchess, the aunt of the future King and probably developing into a sort of beloved 'Princess Lilian'-role.
From all what happened since the separation and divorce of both the Duchess of York as well the late Princess of Wales, I truly doubt they would find real happiness again after their royal divorces.
