I have read more than once that it was Sarah who wanted the divorce because married royal life was not what she had thought it would be - too much protocol and too many strictures for a free spirit like Fergie. As well, she has said that Andrew was away almost all of the time because of his naval career and when he was home all he wanted to do was golf and watch videos.

: If i remember the speculations at the time
: correctly the separation and divorce were
: not Sarah's idea and Andrew might have
: wanted something else as well. Speculation
: had it that they were ordered to seperate
: and divorce by the Queen with the Duke of
: Edinburgh as the main force behind it. Sarah
: had by that time dragged the Royal Family
: through plenty of scandals and their
: seperation and divorce were a great
: test-case for a solution of the Wales'
: problem that also existed at the time.
: Contrary to Charles and Diana Sarah and
: Andrew have always managed to keep their
: personal relationship cordial (even though
: she clearly cheated on him).

: All by all a depressing affair. The
: separation
: and divorce from the Duke of York was the
: poorest of the many poor decisions in
: Sarah's life.
:
: It seems that they really go along very
: well. A period of separation could have
: worked things out and then we would already
: a decade ago have celebrated the Silver
: Wedding of their marriage.
:
: None of the Queen's children has reached
: that milestone.
