One of my friends went on a tour of the Great Kitchen/Windsor Castle yesterday morning
(see below for more offcial info from royal website).
Being the only person who had booked the 10am tour & there were 2 people to take her round! The kitchen has been used for over 700 years & it is where the food for a State banquet is prepared.
It has all modern fittings now, but it still has some of the old ranges in it & copper pots with monograms of George IV & Queen Victoria on them. The kitchen & the surrounding area was damaged in the fire in 1992. The result was that they discovered lots of old features which had been covered over.
Much of this has now been uncovered.
You also see the undercroft which is a large vaulted room & the State Entrance where important visitors are received.
From here there is a wonderful view out over the quadrangle & through the arch & all the way down the Long Walk!!
BTW. Anyone with a special interest in royal photography really ought to visit St. George’s Chapel to see the exhibition of photographs taken by & of Princess Alice Countess of Athlone on her visit to Saudi Arabia in 1938, which are very nicely displayed.
This exhibit is on until 24 October, not Sundays.
(See also Hugo Vickers’ very informative article in this month’s “Majesty” please).
