: Thanks for the reminder Karen. A pivotal
: moment in the History of Britain and all of
: Europe.
:
: I know it is 57 years away, and I probably
: won't be here by then, I would be 103, but I
: have wondered if there would be a big
: celebration in Britain on the 1,000 year
: anniversary of the Norman Conquest in 2066?
I certainly won't be here by then, thank God.But I sincerely hope that most people at that time will recognize that 'celebration' is not exactly what is required here. After all, what is there to celebrate? The enslavement of a once comparatively free people to foreign oppressors who introduced a class divide between lord and commoner that persisted well into the 20th century?
It should indeed be a time for scholarly and historical reflection and debate. But why on earth would anyone outside of the Norman-descended monarchy and aristocracy want to celebrate such an event??
