: I think Princess Anne (daughter of the current
: monarch) always outranked Princess Margaret
: (daughter of the previous monarch) as did
: Sarah Ferguson and Sophie Rhys-Jones
: (daughters-in-law of the current monarch).
I agree that daughters of the current monarch would probably outrank daughters of previous monarchs but I'm just not sure about the daughters-in-law.Alpha and others taught me to understand that precedence in the royal family conforms with that of the peerage in that the daughters collectively have precedence over younger sons (and their spouses) which is why,for instance,Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon being the youngest daughter of an earl was styled 'Lady' before her marriage whilst all of her brothers bar the eldest were only styled 'Honourable'.I recall that this was clarified for us in the recent thread about Marie,Duchess Of Edinburgh who could not understand that,as the wife of a younger son of Queen Victoria, she took precedence after all of Victoria's daughters as well as the Princess of Wales.
: Obviously when Queen Maud was present in the
: UK she would take precedence following Queen
: Mary and Queen Alexandra but I get the
: impression that although Queen Maud was
: often in the UK, it was very rarely in an
: official capacity.
Indeed but I was talking about what would happen on the occasions when Queen Maud was present.Even in her absence her sisters Louise, the Princess Royal (until her death in 1931) and Princess Victoria (died 1935) together with their niece Princess Mary may still have enjoyed precedence over the Duchess of York, the 'mere' wife of a younger son of George V.
: According to the Shawcross book (and the
: Vickers book before it), there was
: apparently an element of jealousy from some
: of the older princesses about a commoner
: entering the royal family in such a high
: position.
Quite possibly but then Elizabeth herself apparently thought that Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten (born Prince Philip of Greece & Denmark) was not good enough for her elder daughter.
