I think Princess Anne (daughter of the current monarch) always outranked Princess Margaret (daughter of the previous monarch) as did Sarah Ferguson and Sophie Rhys-Jones (daughters-in-law of the current monarch).
Obviously when Queen Maud was present in the UK she would take precedence following Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra but I get the impression that although Queen Maud was often in the UK, it was very rarely in an official capacity.
According to the Shawcross book (and the Vickers book before it), there was apparently an element of jealousy from some of the older princesses about a commoner entering the royal family in such a high position.
Yes I second that comment about Alpha, she has long been absent, I hope she is ok.

: Elizabeth was never second lady of the land
: until the death of her husband and she was
: supplanted by her daughter. At the time of
: her marriage in 1923, she ranked 4th behind
: The Queen, Queen Alexandra and Princess
: Mary. She moved to 3rd following the death
: of Queen Alexandra but remained the third
: lady of the land until her husband became
: King and she was automatically transferred
: to first.
:
: I think she may actually have been much
: further down the line of precedence than
: this at the time of her marriage.Queen
: Mary,Queen Alexandra,Princess Louise the
: Princess Royal,Princess Mary Countess of
: Harewood,Princess Victoria and Queen Maud of
: Norway (George V's other two sisters) may
: have outranked her.Don't the daughters of a
: monarch collectively outrank younger sons
: and their wives? Then again there were three
: daughters of Queen Victoria still alive at
: that time (Princesses Helena,Louise and
: Beatrice) who also may have outranked her
: being daughters of a monarch.Several of
: these women were still living at the time of
: the abdication so Elizabeth may still have
: been way down the pecking order at the time
: she became Queen.

: Where's Alpha when you need her?
