Interesting. I didn't realise this as the news report that I heard merely stated that the visit was in exceptance of an invitation made by the Catholic Church of England and Wales soon after the current Pope's election.
If its a State Visit who will take the place of the usual Head of State's consort at the State Banquet, I wonder? Perhaps HRH The Duchess of Kent could be Popess-for-a-Day!

: I heard on the BBC World Service yesterday
: that His Holiness the Pope will be paying a
: state visit to Britain in September 2010.
: It will be the first formal state visit by a
: pope to Britain.
:
: ...since 1982.
:
: Pope John Paul II's visit was not officially
: a state occasion. He came at the invitation
: of the Catholic Church in England &
: Wales,not the British government.However, he
: accepted invitations to meet the Queen and
: the Archbishop of Canterbury etc. whilst he
: was here so it took on something of the
: flavour of a state visit.
:
: Pope Benedict XVI has accepted an invitation
: from the British government so his visit
: will be a formal state occasion unlike the
: previous one.
