Interesting revelations, namely that the Queen-Mother had been in love with the Duke of Windsor and G VI equerry before finally accepting him.
One thing I always found difficult to understand :
It's been said that she never forgave the E VIII and Wallis, because, in the end, their marriage caused the constitutional crisis that brought George VI to the throne.
E VIII abdicated in 1936.
At that time it was not yet foreseen that war would break out 3 years later with the massive destruction it caused world wide and in particularly to George VI health.
So for 3 years the health problem did not arose but since the abdication she had hard feelings to Edward and Wallis.
Why ? That paved the way for her to become Queen and Emperess !
Wouldn't an ambitious woman like Elizabeth prefer to be Queen (and Emperess) rather than a mere Duchess like her sisters-in-law, the flamboyante Marina of Kentor the shy Alice of Gloucester ?
What would have been her life and role, should Edward have married a suitable bride or just did not marry ?
Despite her gentle face, she was a very determined and ambitious woman, recognized as such even by A.Hitler.
I always felt "the four of us" pictures a bit too much corny and made for public relations purposes.
The book - how truthful it may be - shows a different woman.
She was the one "who wore the pants" at home, G VI being described as a nincompoop always undershadowed by her energie and wishes.
And she is the one that said that a woman (Diana) should not overshadow her husband (Charles).
Of course Elizabeth did it exactly the same, but in a more diplomatic way and was fortunate enough that George VI had the ego of a jellyfish ... a bit different from Charles .
