Pope John Paul II's visit was not officially a state occasion.He came at the invitation of the Catholic Church in England & Wales,not the British government.However, he accepted invitations to meet the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury etc. whilst he was here so it took on something of the flavour of a state visit.
Pope Benedict XVI has accepted an invitation from the British government so his visit will be a formal state occasion unlike the previous one.
