The timing is completely wrong so cannot reflect any real affair between Giscard d'Estaing and Diana. He left office a year after she married Charles.
It's just a story he wrote. If the old man fantasized about an affair with Diana and wrote a book about it, that's just what it is a book of an old man's fantasy. At least he had the dencency to use fake characters. No doubt his publishers very much enjoy this speculation about Diana as it will boost the sales.
