The main public job of the Lord Lieutenant (and deputy) is to be the official greeter when a royal comes along to perform an official duty. They are listed in the Court Circular, x royal did/went to such and such and was welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant for Devon (etc)

: Thanks for explaining! I stand corrected, I
: always thought that the Lord Lieutenant was
: the homologue of a Dutch Queen's
: Commissionary but the latter is more
: political (president of the Provincial State
: council), I think. But I think that
: upholding the dignity of the Crown is a
: different task from that a Dutch Commissaris
: van de Koning(in).
:
: In practice: how does one uphold the Crown's
: dignity on a daily working basis? Example?
