They weren't received by the Pope after their wedding. The day before their wedding they had an audience with the Pope, not a private one, but one of his regular audiences with members of the public. They stood behind barriers just like the other people in the room. Hello magazine carried pictures, as well as wedding pictures.
They are probably devout catholics who chose to marry at a site important to catholics. No different to the various devout catholics who go to Lourdes (Duchess of Kent included has volunteered to accompany groups of ill and dying people there) or other Holy sites for catholics. Catholics express their religion in different ways, theirs was the marry in a small chapel in the Vatican.
