William Shawcross's biography of Queen Elizabeth is released in the UK on Thursday, to mark the occasion he has formally presented a copy to Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, although it is understood they have read it and given it approval for publication some time ago.
Snippets of its content have already leaked. In one of the most interesting bits of pre-release information, a letter written by Queen Elizabeth to Queen Mary reveals how a German bomb attack on Buckingham Palace narrowly missed killing The King, Shawcross once again drags up the rumours of a second marriage to King Olav V of Norway and the book also reveals the cautious reaction within the royal court to the news that the King's second son the Duke of York was marrying a mere commoner and even some uncertainty as to whether she would in fact become royal as a result, Lord Stamfordham, George V’s private secretary even wrote to the Home Secretary just two days before the royal wedding in 1923 to clarify whether Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was in fact entitled to become a HRH and Duchess of York as a result of her marriage!
