Lord and lady Nicholas Windsor did not marry in a major church at the Vatican but simply in a romantic and very simple chapel, the Chiesa Santo Stefano degli Abissini:
Rome is a fantastic city and this is a very lovely place. It is free for anyone to marry where he/she wants. I would not attach too much symbolic importance to this.
