What would your opinion be if some serious amateur would decide who would be accepted/suitable to take part in art and antiques fairs (your trade IIRC)? PoW might be right sometimes but he is no position to do so. But a professional background is necessary in all fields. What if we leave that to just "opinions' based on "to like" or "not to like"? Even if he werent the Prince of Wales but some other VIP.
We all have opinions about for instance what we like about art or not, but if we do not have the right professional cv we can never become the director of a museum of art, just to mention but one example.
Perhaps Prince of Wales really should start to study architecture. He has a lot of spare time, I suppose. It might change his views. Or perhaps it would allow him to be open more to different attitudes than the "one and only" attitude.
To study art and archiecture means: get rid of the idea of beautiful and ugly, for everybody has different views about those qualifications. It's about argumenting why you find something ugly or beautiful.
But I must say too (I admit) that I am not too enthusiastic about modern English architecture either in comparison with modern architecture abroad. "It's neither fish nor meat" (the Dutch put it like it that; although British design is interesting).
