: 1346: Edward III of England, claimant to the
: French crown
:
: Surely the true heiress was Jeanne II of
: Navarre, eldest daughter of Louis X of
: France & Navarre.
But Jeanne's claims had been set aside back in 1316 (when her infant half-brother Jean I died) mainly because of her mother's imprisonment for adultery which had put her paternity in dispute.Although interestingly it did not seem to have affected her right to inherit the smaller kingdom of Navarre.
By 1346,when Edward III took to the field against Philippe VI,there were several male descendants of the last three Capetian kings living.Edward based his claim on the fact that he was the closest male relation of the last of these kings at the time of his death in 1328.There were some legal arguments to support his case.
