In his bodybuilding encyclopedia, he actually talks about imagining yourself as Conan in order to motivate yourself, reinforcing the notion that Arnold was doing more than simply playing a role in that film.

One of the better on screen depictions of a fictional character, IMO. Was he perfect? No. But he captured the spirit of the character and did a darned good acting job IMO...he was as authentic as it gets IMO. Actually, I'm not entirely sure if you can call it "acting", it seemed to me he was simply living the role during his time on set.
