: Red Sonja #35
:
:
: WHAT?!!?!?!?
:
: In the previous issue, RS decided to be
: reborn. The issue takes place approximately
: 20 years after the last. RS is a princess
: or queen. It appears she’s not a warrior at
: all, and is happily married but doesn’t have
: (but wants) children. While her husband is
: away, she’s told by a diplomat from another
: land that they want RS’s kingdom to decide
: whether to be under foreign rule.
:
: Laced in between the basic RS character
: reboot, Claw (remember the mini?) is scaling
: a mountain, searching for the Goddess. He
: looks a bit older. No name is given for the
: character, but the hand seems to give the
: identity away. Claw finds the Goddess, runs
: her through, and then (we assume) Kulan Gath
: starts talking to him. Claw performs a
: spell, which gives him the identity of the
: “new” RS. It appears he’s going after her.
: Gath says the Goddess won’t be too happy
: with Claw when she heals.
I know it's a little late to reply here, but even before I got to read #36 (which I already did), I already guessed that this was Osin. The "monster hand" I took it as a nod to Claw, but not as it would be actually Claw, since that character was created at DC which is not necessarily rooted in the same world as Conan, despite the crossover with Red Sonja some years ago.
Also, for some reason, I'm feeling like the mysterious figure talking to him might not be Kulan Gath, but Suumaro.
: The issue wraps up with RS taking off with
: her husband on a ship, only to be approached
: by a boat of pirates.
:
: ---
:
: This is a completely different take on RS.
: I’ve never seen a reboot that fundamentally
: changes a character so. I’m predicting that
: this version of RS will be attacked by
: Claw/Gath, and the Goddess will give her a
: chance to return to her old form. In doing
: so, she’ll save the day, but have to turn
: her back on her husband, and the dream of
: having children.
Hmm... well now we know how it turned out. Still, I'd like to point out that considering that since the manipulations by the Godess were revealed, I'm glad it turned out the way it did, with Osin now becoming her mentor-figure (or at least, that's what the ending of issue #36 seems to hint).
Something else comes to my mind: in her previous incarnation, Sonja had the limitation that she had to remain a virgin to keep her power, right? Well, that would no longer be the case here, because we know that she's not a virgin in this life, since she was married and we've seen her in bed with her husband. So, the Godess approaching her wouldn't make much sense now.
I don't know if this apply in the Hyborian mythos, but in many ancient cultures rooted on the mythical, some spells required that the subject upon which they'd befall remained a virgin.
If that was the case in Sonja's previous life, that would no longer be a possibility right now.
: The art is solid, and the issue covers a
: pretty good bit of ground in reintroducing
: the RS universe. I’m hoping, however, that
: the first arc of the reboot isn’t
: decompressed beyond 5 issues.
I had a good feeling after reading these two issues, not like they were decompressed, but like they flowed nicely, instead.
But yeah, I hope for the best from Brian Reed's run. This new creative team looks promising.
