Red Sonja #35
WHAT?!!?!?!?
In the previous issue, RS decided to be reborn. The issue takes place approximately 20 years after the last. RS is a princess or queen. It appears she’s not a warrior at all, and is happily married but doesn’t have (but wants) children. While her husband is away, she’s told by a diplomat from another land that they want RS’s kingdom to decide whether to be under foreign rule.
Laced in between the basic RS character reboot, Claw (remember the mini?) is scaling a mountain, searching for the Goddess. He looks a bit older. No name is given for the character, but the hand seems to give the identity away. Claw finds the Goddess, runs her through, and then (we assume) Kulan Gath starts talking to him. Claw performs a spell, which gives him the identity of the “new” RS. It appears he’s going after her. Gath says the Goddess won’t be too happy with Claw when she heals.
The issue wraps up with RS taking off with her husband on a ship, only to be approached by a boat of pirates.

This is a completely different take on RS. I’ve never seen a reboot that fundamentally changes a character so. I’m predicting that this version of RS will be attacked by Claw/Gath, and the Goddess will give her a chance to return to her old form. In doing so, she’ll save the day, but have to turn her back on her husband, and the dream of having children.
The art is solid, and the issue covers a pretty good bit of ground in reintroducing the RS universe. I’m hoping, however, that the first arc of the reboot isn’t decompressed beyond 5 issues.
