"The Hand of Negral" comes to a close. Also an old Conan is reprinted.
No real surprises here, but it felt a little rushed. Conan tracks down the evil doers, saves the day, fights off the evil demon god thing, and lives to fight another day. I won't go into all the details of the issue, lest I ruin what has been an overall well done arc.
I will take exception to what, I thought, was probably the most compelling side story: the return of Nestor Gunderman.
Gunderman was a compelling character in an earlier arc who met an unfortunate end by being hanged in the town square. Conan was a bit upset about this, and took revenge on the perps. He's resurrected to go after Conan, and waits for him in Atalis' Star Chamber (where Negral is waiting to devower(?) marry(?) Iniri).
After the big fight, Gunderman appears. Conan recognizes him and gives a general salutation. Gunderman appears to retain some small portion of his former self, but then attacks. In what seems like 2 panels (really, it's 2 pages), Conan defeats Gunderman.
but...but...! I could be wrong, but I thought Iniri was originally trying to find Conan to tell him about Gunderman having been res'd to kill him. Of course, she doesn't get around to it, but it's not that that bothers me. It's that I wished they gave more time to the undead Gunderman. It just felt like he lurked until the end of the story line, then made a 2 page cameo. Sigh.....
But what can you do? Still a very good arc, and a very good conclusion. The art was a little uneven for my tastes. Giorello does well, especially with so many undead things wandering around, and I especially like his Negral. Conan's face, however, seems to go from young to old, thin, to fat through the issue.
All in all, great arc. now on to the next run!
