nothing makes me want to write a post after spending WAYYYYYYYYYY too much money at the comic shop buying old conan and red sonja trades.
so then.....CONAN 48!!!
spoilers below
The issue opens up w/ iniri, the psychic (or what ever she is) talking to her princess about an upcoming marriage. yes, this can't bode well.
after a few short panels, great action follows. conan lays into a horde of zombie like creatures who are going after the princess. yes, the "city-born dogs" cower from the opposing army, except for stremm, who unfortunately takes a few arrows in the back. typical. the action scenes are beautifully rendered by thomas giorello, yet i can't help but wonder if a different artist rendered the opening panels. maybe it's just the coloring by jo mettler. look for yourself....the just look different.
either way, you'll note that conan takes quite a few wounds to the leg in this battle. the first is easy enough to see. a zombie stabs conan in the leg (right quad, i think) with a dagger, then conan steps on his head. the second injury, however looks more substantial. right quad again, but a full sword slice that looks fairly deep. let's see how whether this is followed up on in conan 49.
the obligatory blunt force head shot KO's conan, and the zombies make off with their girl. just when iniri appears ready to go to conan, she's carted off, too. very unexpected.
ah, but i left out a little detail....
in between all the fighting, we see a wizard who, apparently, is behind animating the zombie army. unfortunately, he's knifed by a zombie he didn't create. hmmm.....this zombie looks rather familiar. it's also looking for a cimmerian.
of course i won't tell you who it is....but let it suffice to say that one of the best characters in the new conan run appears to be back, after summarily being tortured and hanged.
stay tuned.....
all in all, an excellent issue. the art was solid, despite my musing. the action: first rate. i just hope some continuity comes into play, and conan's leg injury shows up next issue. plot line: great twist in bringing "back" the zombie. with only 2 issues left for this run, it'll be interesting to see how it all wraps up.
