"All this Conan stuff seemed to come at once," Truman said, "But I've been a huge Conan fan since I was 12 years old, reading the Robert E. Howard paperbacks." Truman's run begins with Conan #33, with Cary Nord remaining as artist. "We're going to try to stay as close to Robert E. Howard as we can," Truman said. "And then we're going to pick up on different threads that Howard left in his stories." Truman's first arc will be three issues and serves as a prequel to "Rogues in the House," which will be his second arc. "I've been re-reading the stories, trying to pick up as much as I can," Truman said. "It's a lot like doing historical research." The Free Comic Book Day story is "The Spear," in which a sorcerer receives a vision about a tremendous force washing over the world, and decides it's a prophecy ordering him to revive his sleeping god. Pat Lee provides the art. Truman reunites with his Jonah Hex collaborator Joe R. Lansdale on Conan and the Songs of the Dead #1, a five-issue series that kicks off on July 5. Truman said this story is not an adpaptation. "It's pure Joe," Truman said, laughing. "It's a rip-roarin' Conan adventure. It's pure Joe and it's pure Howard. It's something Robert E. Howard would have enjoyed." Here's how Dark Horse describes the first issue: "This five-part series begins in the wretched wastes of Stygia, a burning, grinding stretch of desert so desolate the only thing more unforgiving are its inhabitants. There, Conan comes to the aid of an old ally, uncovers a scheme to acquire untold-of wealth, and punishes his foolish enemies most cruelly. Yet when his treasure hunt reveals an alluring spirit with long unsatisfied needs, the Cimmerian knows a gentler touch is required to win the day." Truman said he's into the second issue of the mini-series.
