My father, 1st Lt Doit L Fish, served in fellow Marine Bomber Squadron VMB 611 as a PBJ-1 Pilot under command of Lt Col George Sarles, Zamboanga, PI. My father and 7-member crew became MIA on 30 May 1945 during a strike at Kibawe Trail near Davao, Mindanao, PI. On that same day, Lt Col Sarles and 3 crew members were KIA on the same strike. My father and crew's wreckage and remains were discovered 16 November 1956 with group burial on 15 July 1957 at Ft Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO.
I am doing research on my Dad and VMB 611 and found your's and VMB 613's websites; both are excellent! I wish VMB 611 had one. I have made contact with Stu Allen of MAG 61, Alan Carey, "Leatherneck Bombers" and several VMB 611 Vets. Would like contact with VMB 423 Vets about early days of all VMB training at Cherry Point, Parris Island and Boca Chica or any other "stuff" you would like to share about WWII.
I am also a member of the Camarillo, CA Wing of the CAF. We are restoring the only current PBJ-1J (BuNo 35857) in existence to honor all VMB squadrons. As I am collecting VMB history for this project, please feel free to contact me.
