Frederick C. “Ted” Eckhardt Sr., age 87, passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, NJ. Ted passed peacefully, surrounded in love by his family. He was born in Baldwin, LI., NY on December 17, 1923, and had resided in Freehold for most of his adult life. He spent many years with his family enjoying the log cabin he had built on the shore of Lake Abanakee, in Indian Lake, NY. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Frances B. Downing.
He is survived by a daughter, Dianne and Richard Bahlmann of Indian Lake, NY: a daughter, Kathie Sack, of Huntington beach, California; a son, Ted Eckhardt and wife, Kathy, of Friendsville, Tenn.; a daughter, Ellen, and Kevin Kane of Freehold, NJ. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Also survived by his brother, Peter Eckhardt, formerly of Indian lake, NY; and his sister-in -law, Barbara and Barry Chetkin, of Ocean, NJ. Also survived by nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
Ted was a WW II Marine Corps veteran-one of the “greatest generation,” who had attained the rank of Captain. He joined the Marines at age 19, and was assigned to the VMB-423 USMC Bombing Squadron as a pilot of the North American B-25 Bomber. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross, earned for flying 60 combat and 48 non-combat missions in the South Pacific. He also won eight air medals for his tour of duty, and continued to fly in the Marine Reserves until 1950, after which he obtained a commercial license.
Mr. Eckhardt retired from Allstate Insurance after 35 years as a Regional Claims Adjuster.
Mr. Eckhardt enjoyed hunting and fishing with his many friends in upstate New York, and enjoyed greatly his succession of Golden Retrievers that he raised over the years.
The viewing was held June 17 at Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, NJ., with services held at St. Rose of Lima RC church.
Internment was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Freehold, NJ.
