I am descended from Benjamin Holding/Holden through Lucretia Holding (born around 1824 in Isle of Wight). I have traced Benjamin through his father's will in 1781; it mentions him and his brother, WIlliam. It seems the family was originally in Southampton County. I believe the earliest mention of a Holden(ing) is WIlliam in 1695 in John Newman and his wife Ruth has William Holden mentioned. (He was probably a bond servant according to the reference). I have not found a listing for his arrival in the colonies during this time-frame.
I have more historical detail.
