Thanks so much for the info. Found this on another board:
#1 Campbell, TE. "Colonial Caroline - A History of Caroline County VA. Dietz Press, Inc. Richmond VA, 1954. [source at DAR Library, Wash.DC, available in 1991]
p.119 "An attempt to get rich quick also led Francis Bearding to crime. ...." - more excerpts about his troubles or his having served as constable are on pages 352, 361, 382, 441, 447, 453, 461. Of note - see p.439 re: Church welfare work; bound children of Jane Bearding; and - p.441n "(6) Jane Bearding's husband Francis was either hung or in prison for the theft of tobacco from Benjamin Hubbard." As I recall the author in this reference had nothing conclusive to say whether Francis had actually been hung or not. Following Court records in Colonial VA were not available reportedly. Have seen nothing of later dates on Francis, however I do keep an eye out.
[If you search this surname forum on my given name, you should bring up a previous message where I've quoted more. Otherwise, please e-mail me.]
#2 Caroline County, VA Order Book 1732-1740. Abs & Compiled by John Frederick Dorman, Wash. DC, 1967. [DAR Library, Wash.DC, available in 1991] (has a few listings for Francis involved in things as a constable; nothing about theft.) p.37, 50, 52, 111. Some WINN notes on p.71 if you're tracing them.
